Neil Patrick Harris (born Neill Patrick Harris, born on June 15, 1973, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA) is an American actor, singer and illusionist. Nominee for "Golden Globe" and laureate of "Tony" and "Emmy" prizes. Best known for the role of Barney Stinson in the television series "How I Met Your Mother" (2005-2014) and Count Olaf in the series "Lemony Snicket: 33 Unhappiness" (2017-present time).
Harris was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and grew up in Ruidoso with his older brother Brian and parents, Sheila Gale and Ronald Gene Harris. His parents were lawyers, and also managed their own restaurant. He studied at the high school of La Cueva High School, which he graduated from in 1991.
Harris made his debut in two films: "Purple People Eater"(1988) and "Clara's Heart" (1988), starring Whoopi Goldberg, and received a Golden Globe nomination. A year later, when Neil was 16 years old, he was invited to star in Stephen Bochko's television series about a teenage doctor in a local hospital, Doogie Howser, MD (1989), in which Neil began as a heart-throbbing teenager.
In 1997, he played the role of Karl Jenkins in the film "Starship Troopers". He is most famous for his role as Barney Stinson in the TV series "How I Met Your Mother". In 2000, he starred in the movie "The Next Best Thing", where he played David, the friend of the hero Rupert Everett. In 2004, he appeared in one of the episodes of the series "Law and Order" as a serial killer. In 2003, he played on Broadway (along with Anne Hatch ) in the play "Steady." In the same year, he worked in the Cabaret with Deborah Gibson and Tom Bosley, where he played the role of MC. In 2004, he played a parody of himself in the film "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle". In 2008, he appeared in the mini-series "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog", where he played the protagonist, Dr Horrible.
In 2009, he voiced Dr. Bloukhol in the animated series "Penguins from Madagascar." In 2011, he appeared in two strips: in the cartoon "The Smurfs", where he played the role of a young man and a brave New Yorker, and in the movie "Beastly" in a blind teacher role. In 2012, he starred in the episodic role in the movie "American Reunion" and in 2013 in the sequel to the movie "Smurfs". In the following year, he played in the comedy "A Million Ways to Die in the West". In the same year, Neil starred in the movie "Gone Girl", which was awarded numerous awards, and also nominated for "Oscar", "Golden Globe" and BAFTA.
Harris is an open gay. He confirmed this in November 2006 with his statement:
"... I am glad to dispel any rumors or delusions, and I am very proud that I can say: I'm a happy gay, live to the fullest and have great pleasure from the fact that I had to work with wonderful people over the common cause that I love.
His partner is an actor and chef David Bartka. Harris and Bartka started dating in 2004 and first appeared in public as a couple at the Emmy Awards in September 2007. In August 2010, the couple announced that they were expecting the birth of twins from a surrogate mother. Their children, Gideon Scott and Harper Grace were born on October 12, 2010.
After the adoption of the law on the equality of marriage in New York in June 2011, Harris and Bartke announced their engagement, noting that they had got engaged five years ago, but kept it a secret, until same-sex marriage in the state where they live became legal. On September 8, 2014, Harris reported on his Twitter page that he and Bartke had married in Italy. The ceremony of their marriage was held by Pamela Freiman, who acted as the director of most episodes of the series "How I Met Your Mother", and Elton John performed at the reception after the wedding.
Harris and his family live in Harlem, one of the districts of New York.
Neal is an amateur magician, like his character in the series "How I Met Your Mother". He is even the chairman of the board of directors in the Castle of Magic.
